Imagine, if someone came through your business door with that distant look in their eyes and suddenly pulled out a gun and started shooting. What would you do, how would you react, where would you go? All good questions that we probably hardly think about, but it can happen.
Recently, TEC Corp, Thompson Electric – all locations, TASS and EI all went through extensive training on what to do and how to respond to a shooter who may enter your business with the intent to harm or kill as many people as they possible can.
What should you do? How to SAVE yourself.
- Run or Flee – get away from the shooter safely if you can – through another door, a window, kick a hole in the drywall or any type of exit.
- Hide – tie the door shut using your belt, electrical cord or anything you can wrap around the door knob or door closure, barricade yourself in a room using as many obstacles to put in front of the entrance to the room. Make it hard for them to enter the room you are hiding in.
- Fight – as a last result, fight for your life. Throwing items at the shooter, this can be anything found in your desk or surroundings. The natural instinct of a person is to duck and follow the item thrown at them with their eyes, which takes away their ability to aim at their target. Physically attack the shooter and disable them until authorities arrive. Most shooters do not want physical violence.
Most people will survive a shooting if they react to the situation. If you do nothing then your chances decrease in surviving. So always be aware of your surroundings, no matter where you are, to either run, hide or fight.
