The history of the NFPA goes back more than 120 years, founded in 1896 with the mission “To help save lives and reduce loss with information, knowledge, and passion.” The NFPA delivers information and knowledge through more than 300 consensus codes and standards, research, training, education, outreach and advocacy; and by partnering with others who share an interest in furthering their mission. Current NFPA membership totals more than 50,000 individuals around the world.
While most are familiar with the NFPA through their publications, many have assumed that the NFPA was a government organization, but in fact, the NFPA is a nonprofit organization. Which means any of its recognized publications, including the well-known “NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, “is not enforceable by law until it is adopted in part or whole by a jurisdictional government such as states. Most states in the US have done precisely this since it was first published in 1896, so it is a common misconception that it is a governmental document.
The same can be said for the NFPA70e as it is also a best practice standard but not itself enforceable by law. In the 70E’s case, however, another agency has adopted it as their standard as their go to, OSHA. OSHA refers to and uses the 70E standard as a guideline to safe electrical work and specifically Arc Flash.

For the third year in a row, the trade publication Site Selection has named Sioux City as the small-size metro area with the most economic development projects.
Sioux City had 26 new or expanded corporate facilities in the category for metros with populations between 50,000 and 200,000 in 2017. That doubled up double the three metros who tied for second place with 13 qualifying projects — Owensboro, Kentucky, Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Gainesville, Georgia. This is one of our great experiences through our 85 years of electrical expertise submitted by Dave Hibler, Service Electrician at Thompson Electric Omaha.
Dave’s experience on a service call yesterday at a customer location we did work for 20 years ago. They identified us from the panel sticker that was put on by the foreman and placed a service call to our office.
Dave identified two positives from this experience:
- First, by putting the label on that panel 20 years ago the customer was able to identify the installing company and call us. Thus offering our team another opportunity to provide great customer service.
- Secondly, we are very proud that the work we did didn’t require any maintenance or repairs for 20 years.
Dave remarked. It was a great experience. The owner came up to me and pointed to the TE logo on my shirt and said to his wife see I told you it’s the same company. “It made me smile!”

On February 3rd, the 25th Annual Awards Banquet was held at the Delta Hotels by Marriott in South Sioux City. The attendance was at an all-time high for the 25th annual event.
The evening started with hors-d’oeuvres and cocktails, followed up with a delicious dinner. After dinner, we were able to focus the evening on the years of service and safety years of service awards. For the Years of Safety Awards, TEC Corp recognized 225 employees that had no incidents this past year and we had 2 employees, Tim Hall and John Staiert that have gone 25 years with no incidents. That is quite an accomplishment. We also celebrated Awards for Years of Service, with 21 employees recognized for 5 years of service, 7 employees with 10 years of service, 6 employees with 15 years of service and Scott Dawson, Corey Floyd, Barrie Larsen and Todd Trobaugh with 20 years, Ray DeWitt with 30 years of service.
We also want to congratulate Brian Duits and John Young on their retirement. They both spent many years working for Thompson Electric and will be greatly missed, but we wish them well in their retirement.
To close out the evening, we were entertained by Comedian Orny Adams, he has appeared on Teen Wolf, Netflix, Comedy Central, and Showtime to name a few.
What a great evening to wrap up a great 2017.
Al Bermudez has been an employee for Thompson Electric – Sioux City for 5 years and is in his 5th year apprenticeship. Al recently participated in his second Ideal Tools – Elite Tradesman Competition, at Lake Buena Vista, FL.
Al began his competition locally, on a Saturday at Echo Supply. The competition included pulling two wires using fish tape thru 3 boxes, connecting one single pole switch in one box, making a slice in the second box, and finally toning out the wires to ensure the switch worked correctly. The judging factors were time, quality and all work had to meet code standards. Al had the fastest apprentice time of 53 seconds.
For the second year in a row Al was one of the 30 finalists that were flown to Lake Buena Vista for the national competition. There was a total of 35,000 applicants nationwide. That’s a pretty amazing accomplishment of its own, but it gets better.
The project he worked on was one he does a lot here at Thompson, LED retrofit and convert a single pole switch that was controlling the lights to 2 three-way switches. Al placed 18th this year in the apprentice division which is a great accomplishment.
Al stated, “I’m just so glad that I have had the chance to represent the state of Iowa twice in Ideals electrical competition. This shows that Sioux City JATC is excelling in training us to succeed in our trade. I am grateful for the journeymen that have taught me so much over the years. I know I could never have gotten as far as I did in these past two years without the skills I learned from them. So a huge thank you to them!”
That’s quite an accomplishment for Al and all of us at Thompson Electric are very proud of Al’s accomplishments. Awesome job Al we can’t wait for the 2018 competition…
The Sioux Area Metro downtown bus depot in Sioux Falls, SD recently underwent reconstruction. In this project, Adam Carpenter and his team updated the lighting and added linear RGB programmable lights to the skylight. This lighting feature will allow the lights to be changed to a wide array of unique colors. The CATV Cabling and programming of the DMX controller was all done by Adam and Thompson Electric team.

Thompson Omaha employees enjoyed a day of food and fun with a Thompson Tailgate party held on September 29th. The entire company was invited for burgers hotdogs and sides. Office employees contributed by bringing sides and salads and many desserts. Kevin Lytle, the General Manager made a statement about how important it was to do activities that promote a positive work culture and a chance to relax and have fun! Over 50 employees from Field Service Technicians to CW’s to Office staff participated in this great activity. We are so excited to continue these activities to make our company an engaging and fun place to work!
